Ever wondered which car brands are most popular in Australia? We’ve taken sales figures for new vehicles from the past 12 months – July 2025 to June 2026 – and tracked their progress.
This graph shows where each brand sat on the top ten list each month. Toyota hold strong across the top while there’s constant switching between Isuzu, MG, Chery and Tesla for the 7-10 spots.
Toyota
That thin blue line straight across the top? That’s not a formatting issue, it’s a sign of complete dominance by Toyota. The Japanese manufacturer has been number one across the whole year – and normally by a comfortable margin.
However, in June 2026 they had their biggest scare with newcomer BYD coming within 243 of the Hilux manufacturers.
BYD
For much of the past year, BYD has been sitting comfortably mid-table. However, a desire to be Australia’s top manufacturer looks to be on track. For three months from April to June ’26, the Chinese car brand was comfortably second on the list. As mentioned above, they were within touching distance of Toyota while having twice the sales of Ford in third.
The interesting thing about BYD is that they don’t have one standout model. While Toyota has the Hilux and Ford has its Ranger, there’s not one single BYD car in the top ten list of models sold.
Ford
For individual models, the Ford Ranger is one of Australia’s favourite utes, often trading top spot with the Hilux.
Frequently in second spot for top brands as well, Ford took a bit of a dip around Christmas 2025, but has climbed back up to third.
While other legacy brands are suffering with the uptake of challengers, specifically Chinese cars, Ford seems to be holding strong.
KIA
A constant name in the top five, KIA peaked at #2 in March, hovered in third spot for a while before dropping down in recent months.
The Korean car maker has a strong name in Australia and continues to introduce new models, keeping options fresh for buyers.
Hyundai
Another legacy brand that’s enjoyed continued success in Australia, but is starting to feel the heat of competition from cheaper options.
Constantly in the top five across the past year for most vehicles sold, it dropped down to sixth for the first time in June 2026. Hyundai will be hoping it’s a momentary blip, but challenger brands like Chery, MG and Isuzu will be hoping to make them drop further.
