While we’d all love to be able to afford the best new utes in Australia, we understand that not everyone has the budget to walk straight to the dealership.
With a new Hilux, Shark or D-Max likely to set you back more than $70k – and top-end Ford Rangers going for more than $100k – it often makes a lot of sense to buy a used ute.
In this article we’ll look at second-hand utes at different price points. So if your budget stretches to $20k, $30k, $40k or $50k, we’ve found options for you.
Best utes for under $20,000
You absolutely can get a reliable ute for less than $20k. For this budget, you’re generally looking for utes that are around 10 years old with 200,000 km on the clock.
In this sort of bracket, you could get a 2014 Ford Ranger, 2014 Holden Colorado or a 2016 VW Amarok.
Something that not a lot of applicants know is that the age of the ute you’re buying can have an impact on your car loan interest rate. The newer it is, the better rate you’re likely to get. If you want something a bit newer, you could get something like a 2019 Great Wall Steed with 60,000 km.
Best utes for under $30,000
Add $10k onto your budget and the utes tend to get newer and with fewer kms on them. There’s quite a range in this space depending on the model, but a few options available at the moment (June 2026) include:
- 2023 GWM ute with 40,000 km
- 2021 Mitsubishi Tritonwith 100,000 km
- 2019 Ford Ranger with 200,000 km

Best utes for under $40,000
There are plenty of great second-hand utes available for $40,000. Again, your mileage will vary depending on when and where you’re buying, but a good yardstick is to look for something like:
- 2021 VW Amarok with 70,000 km
- 2019 Toyota HiLux with 105,000 km
- 2020 Ford Ranger with 120,000 km
Best utes for under $50,000
Once you stretch your budget to $50k, you’re near the top end of the second-hand ute market. Models available at the end of the 2026 financial year include:
- 2024 GWM Ute with 15,000 km
- 2023 Ford Ranger with 70,000 km
- 2022 Isuzu D-Max with 85,000 km
- 2020 Toyota Hilux with 100,000 km
