Lake Macquarie’s best campsites

If youโ€™re travelling through New South Wales, stopping at one of the campgrounds in Lake Macquarie is a must.

With direct lakeside access and sites completely surrounded by bushland, Lake Macโ€™s campsite options offer some of the best nature options in the state.

Whether you want to go east or west of the lake, there are plenty of options to choose from. Take your pick depending on budget, location and facilities. Weโ€™re sure that wherever you go, youโ€™ll want to go again.

Campsites east of Lake Macquarie

Belmont Lakeside Holiday Park, Belmont South

Sitting on a small peninsula jutting out into the lake, the campground at Belmont South is perfect for getting out onto the water. Take your pick from powered caravan spots, cabins (both pet-friendly and accessible) or lakeside camping spots.

Bring your kayak or tinny for instant access to the water and swim in the onsite pool. There’s also a playground for kids, a communal kitchen and BBQ spots. It’s also close to spots like Blacksmiths Beach and Grannies Pool if you want to visit the beach and have an ocean dip.

If you forget anything, it’s just five minutes into Belmont where you can find supermarkets, cafes, pharmacies and more.

Swansea Lakeside Holiday Park, Swansea

Further towards the southern tip of the lake is the Swansea caravan park. Again, this is right on the water and you can walk from your campsite to the beach for a swim in the lake.

For accommodation, you have your choice of powered sites, ensuite sites and unpowered sites, some with water views. For a more permanent structure, you can go for the cabins, villas or safari tents.

Laundry, kitchen and BBQ facilities are available as standard. Swansea’s campsite also has a recently revamped swimming pool and playground, as well as tennis courts, mini and pedal kart hire.

Basic supplies are available at reception and the shops at Swansea are just a few minutes away. Caves Beach, one of the best in the area, is less than ten minutes away by car.

Campsites south of Lake Macquarie

Ingenia Holidays Lake Macquarie, Mannering Park

As well as a range of accommodation options (including lakeside villas, powered sites and grassy camping spots), Ingenia Holidays has one of the most pristine locations in the area.

Right at the southern point of the lake, visitors can gaze out over the water without getting out of bed. As well as the usual activities (kayaks and stand-up paddleboards are available for hire), thereโ€™s an onsite boat ramp to make it as simple as possible to get out onto the water.

Other facilities include a playground, jumping castle and swimming pool.

Mannering Park has an IGA for all grocery needs, the Doylo RSL is ten minutes away and there are plenty of other spots around the lake and out to the coal, like Catherine Hill Bay, to explore from this campsite.

Jasmine Lakeside Village, Wyee Point

This family owned site is another option that sidles up to the lake. Make use of the boat ramp or take your kayak straight into the water.

Not far from the village youโ€™ll find the Munmorah State Conservation Area thatโ€™s full of hiking trails and picnic spots in the bush.

There are no camping spots at Jasmine, only caravan sites. The grounds have three pools, a playground, a tennis court and an indoor games room. Thereโ€™s all the expected facilities like a laundry room too.

Campsites west of Lake Macquarie

Gap Creek Campground, Watagans National Park

Although still in Lake Macquarie, Gap Creek Campground is away from the water and into the tranquility of bushland.

Unlike most on this site, Gap Creek offers the bare bones so itโ€™s definitely about the destination. All youโ€™ll find is three unpowered sites with a toilet, picnic table and BBQ facilities. Make sure to bring your own water and, if fire restrictions permit, some firewood. Camping is free but requires a $6 booking fee.

Just by the campground youโ€™ll find some of the stateโ€™s best hiking trails, including the walking track to the Gap Creek waterfall, a cascading fall of more than 40m (if weโ€™ve had rain recently).

Morisset Showground, Morisset

Ideal for people with large RVs and pets, Morisset Showground has 10 powered and 10 unpowered sites ($33/$28 per night) with basic toilet and shower amenities.

The showground is in use for large events throughout the year, so make sure to book ahead of time to make sure you get a spot to sleep.

Once youโ€™ve set up for the night, itโ€™s just a short walk into the heart of Morisset where you can grab a bite to eat or stock up on supplies.
