If there’s one country that’s known for building reliable cars, it’s Germany. Some of the best and most luxurious models come from this European country, but not all of them make it all the way to us.
As of 2026, there are five German car brands available in Australia:
- Audi
- BMW
- Mercedes-Benz
- Porsche
- Volkswagen
Audi
Audi is firmly established in Australia with 48 models and variants available on the local market. Some of the most recognisable of these are the A, Q and S series, but cars like the TT have a cult-like following.
Audi’s cars are linked by a modern design and luxurious finishes. These high-end cars can be expensive, but their owners rarely have buyer’s remorse. Along with BMW and Mercedes-Benz below, Audi sell in high numbers across the world.
Two new models were released in Australia in late 2025/early 2026: the Q3 and Q5.
BMW
One of the most famous car brands in the world, BMW is a name known for its high quality of car. Like Audi, there’s a high number of BMW options available in Australia, with 65 models available in 2026.
BMW is known for its sporty cars but today they make plenty of other options too. The X series SUVs have taken to local conditions well, while the 3 and 5 series remain universally popular.
German cars tend to be expensive and BMWs are no exception. Expect to pay $60+k for a brand new model.
Mercedes-Benz
You may be noticing a pattern by now. High quality cars, high entry price, high number of available models. There are currently 27 Mercedes-Benz models available in Australia, all neatly arranged into series.
The A Class is the entry-level option, with driveaway prices still starting at around $55k. These also tend to be the smaller of the Mercs available.
If you’re looking at something a bit bigger, their SUVs are found in the G Class where driveaway prices are north of $200k.
At the top of the range is the Mercedes-Maybach GLS 600. With a current driveaway price of more than half a million dollars – a house in some parts of Australia – it’s one of the more expensive cars available in 2026.
Porsche
Owning a Porsche is on the bucket list of many Aussies and with five models to choose from you’re spoilt for choice. The Porsches available to buy in Australia at the moment are:
- 911
- Cayenne
- Macan
- Panamera
- Taycan
The majority of these are just how you picture them – sleek, sporty and sexy. The Cayenne and Macan takes the brand into SUV territory – a must in this country – while the Taycan is Porsche’s first venture into electric cars.
Volkswagen
Not all German cars are high-end, which is good news if you’re on a tight budget. If you want to buy a car known for its incredible European engineering without breaking the bank, then VW might be for you. With 29 models currently available in Australia, there’s a Volkswagen for every type of driver.
The Golf and Polo area small, zippy city cars, the Amarok an attempt to get into the ute market and the Tiguan the leading SUV option. If you’re looking to go electric, the ID range answers your needs.

Buying a German car in Australia
As well as these new models, you may be able to find second-hand German cars from other brands – specifically Opel – but these no longer have a presence here for newer releases.
